He never learns!! Should not have a job after the Falcons gave it away!! 6.4 yards per attempt and gave up on the rush. Up ten run the damn ball. They should reward him by making him the highest paid coach in the league. They being the Patriots and Chefs!

8 minutes left, a ten point lead, possession, and the Niners with the best running game in football, throw three straight passes. Three and out. Get the ball back with 5 minutes to go. 5 yard run, two incomplete passes.

Am I crazy or should this team have been running the ball in the 4th quarter with the lead?

THey wouldn't let Jimmy G throw at the end of the half. Then this.

Bad play calling when it counted. Real bad.

It's almost like Shanny is the new Andy Reid

Excellent play caller, improves every QB he coaches but seems to overthink it in the big moments.

I'm glad my bet on this game was really small. The only thing I cared about on the gambling front was the pools.

This contains a pretty good rundown of the coaching. Some of the "Should've run the ball" stuff is overstated. Really the only time they should've run and didn't was that 2nd and 5/3rd and 5 sequence. The next series it was 2nd and 9, not really a running down.

I think the best two critiques are clearly the end of the first half stupidity and then on 4th and 2 at the 24 to start the 2nd half they kicked the FG rather than go for it. Yeah, going for it is ballsy but that's why Doug Pedersen has a ring and Shanny doesn't. It is the right move vs the Chiefs.

Disagree. Team averaged 6.4 yards per attempt, even at 2nd and 9, they could have easily got a first down running the ball. I'm not saying they should have ran every single play, but after Mahomes second pick it was three running plays and thirteen passing plays!! Idiot didn't learn from 3 years ago!! Plus why go conservative before the half and then open it up nursing a ten point lead with 11 minutes left!?!?

"First half stupdity" in my post referred to the end of the half stuff. One thing that is overlooked is SF actually did that vs Minnesota as well, they just dominated the 2nd half so it didn't matter at all. If you're not gonna let your QB throw the ball in those spots and try to score, then you need to get a new QB.

But 2nd and 9? That's a passing down in the NFL, even if you think they should've kept running there, it isn't exactly worthy of harsh critique.

Whenever you get some dubious coaching decision in these games, people tend to lump even the borderline stuff in with the bad.

Also, the 13/3 pass/run split was because they were behind most of those plays and had to throw.

Actually my bad it was 4/12 split with a forward lateral to Mostert for 17 yards, which further proves that Shanahan was a fool for not running more!

(2:39 - 4th) (Shotgun) R.Mostert right tackle to SF 32 for 17 yards (K.Fuller).

Most of those plays came when they were down 24-20 with like 3 minutes left though. Hard to be running much there.

Disagree. Niners had the best rushing attack minus QB plays, second overall I believe and Chiefs rush defence not very good. If you look and the previous week Niners ran the ball at 3rd and 8!

[h=3]3rd & 8 at GB 36[/h]
(5:55 - 1st) Raheem Mostert 36 Yard Rush R.Gould extra point is GOOD, Center-K.Nelson, Holder-M.Wishnowsky.

Saying they should've run the ball on 2nd and 9 is getting a little too results oriented for me. If they ran there and it got stuffed after being stuffed on 1st down (with Jimmy's passing stats being very good at that point in the game, believe he was 13/15 at that point) then I think we know what many would say. Not saying you're wrong but I don't think running on 2nd and 9 is some slam dunk and doing otherwise is pure idiocy.

I'll stick with his bad coaching was not running on 2nd/3rd and 5 on the other possession, the first half clock killing and not going for it on 4th and 2.

More running plays with long yardage to gain

[h=3]2nd & 8 at SF 46[/h][h=3]
(5:54 - 3rd) D.Samuel right end to GB 22 for 32 yards (D.Lowry).

[/h][h=3]2nd & 10 at GB 22[/h][h=3]
(4:49 - 3rd) Raheem Mostert 22 Yard Rush R.Gould extra point is GOOD, Center-K.Nelson, Holder-M.Wishnowsky.

At the very least running the ball will give your D a little more time to catch their breathe, and give KC less time to work with. With that rushing attack up by ten with 11 minutes left it's really a no brainer!

Atleast put yourself back in the moment though. Jimmy was shredding at that point in the game, especially when KC was selling out to stop the run.

They call it fools gold for a reason.
